First BELTA Branch formed at Chittagong: 9 May 2006
 
BELTA Chittagong was launched with the consent of 51 local ESL teachers after a day-long ELT teacher training workshop jointly organized by BELTA and RELO (Regional English Language Office Delhi, US State Dept)
 
Based in the Department of English, Independent University of Bangladesh, Chittagong.
Coordinators: Ms Rehana Alam and Dr Golam Faruque
 
Branches to be opened at Sylhet, Rajshahi, Barisal, Bogra, Mymnesingh and other places shortly
 
South Asian Regional Teachers Association Meetings
BELTA joined India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia, Maldives, Nigeria, Afghanistan
Objectives: Formulating good practice principles, local and regional network, and regional action plan:

BELTA-JALT Scholarship for High School Teachers
 
7 awarded (out of 29 applications) – from a grant of USD 500 from JALT (Japan Association for Language Teachers) for ELT Teacher Training Certificate Courses to be run with BELTA expertise
 
2.
Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants (FLTA) program
 
BELTA has been invited by the American Cultural Center for the last 3 years to nominate eligible English teachers to this nine-month program in the US.

Global Connections Exchange Programme (GCEP), January 2006
 
Collaborated with Bangladesh Relief International-Schools Online (RISOL) & the American Centre to nominate secondary school teachers of English for 3-month TEFL and Adult ESL Certificate Programme at Hamline University, Minnesota

Eurasia/South Asia Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA), December 2006
 
BELTA nominated 30 secondary school teachers of English for a 6-week program in the USA (Summer & Fall 2007). Selection process on-going
 
RECENT EVENTS
 
EFL Teacher Training Programme: 14 – 15 Feb, 2007
 
Maximizing English Language Learning in Bangladesh.
In-collaboration with Hamline University USA, Relief International and BIAM, with support from the US State Department.
Participants: 98 secondary schools.
Facilitators : 5 from Hamline University and 3 from BELTA.
Venue: BIAM Foundation.
 
English Language Teacher Training Programme: 18-19 Feb, 2007
 
Classroom Teaching Techniques
Jointly organized by BELTA and SOS Herman Gmeiner School & College, Mirpur.
Participants: 22 secondary school teachers from 7 higher secondary schools in Mirpur area and from the regions.
Facilitators: visiting US ELT experts & lifetime members of BELTA & 2 BELTA trainers.
Venue: SOS Herman Gmeiner School & College, Mirpur.
