| BELTA
fights back after Conference postponement! |
| After being completely
devasted by the sudden turn of events in the country leading to
the postponement of the scheduled conference, BELTA was able to
rise from the ashes like the proverbial phoenix, thanks to the
exhilarating presence of teacher trainer and writer Jeremy Harmer
and the group of 6 facilitators led by Prof William Balsamo, who
had arrived for the conference.
Before that it had been pandemonium. The presenter from Delhi
had to turn round and go home after flying as far as Kolkata.
Others (from Pakistan and Nepal) were urgently called not to
start their journeys. Richard Boyum had been warned of the situation
by the US Embassy so did not venture on to the plane. Poor George
Pickering from Britain spent a single day and night cooped up
in the curfew in a hotel in Dhaka before taking the first flight
back home.
In the meantime, BELTA members rallied round and organised
an impromptu programme that attracted about 90 ELT people for
2 full days of workshops and demos on the 25th & 26th of
August at Presidency University !

| And
with the support of the British Council BELTA organised
a seminar by Jeremy Harmer at the hotel Sonargaon - it
was a stunning event with about 170 people attending at
a day's notice. Jeremy Harmer was able to make both his
scheduled presentations before leaving for Britain.

BELTA then went on to hold its previously scheduled 2-day TT
programme at the National Academy of Educational Management
on the 27th and 28th of August. (See below: August 27-28

teachers link to Visiting ELT specialists through the Teachers
Helping Teachers project).
So it was a very busy 5 days for BELTA, in spite of the enormous
setback it had suffered. And to organize all this, members had
to work hard round the clock behind the scenes.
